Physicians treating persons with diabetes should be aware of the new understandings of the causes and consequences of insulin resistance..

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Define the concept of the insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) as a set of predisposing factors for a variety of disorders.

  2. Clarify aspects of the relationship between obesity and reduction in insulin sensitivity.

  3. Describe the possible effects of reduction in AMP-activated protein kinase and elevations in malonyl-CoA.

  4. Analyze abnormalities in glucocorticoid metabolism contributing to insulin resistance.

  5. Explain potential alterations in mitochondrial function and in peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor (PPAR) γ coactivator (PGC)-1 contributing to abnormalities of insulin action.

  6. Discuss complexities of the relationship between insulin resistance and the central nervous system (CNS).

  7. Identify relationships between biological rhythms and insulin sensitivity.

There are 11 multiple choice questions presented in this course.  A minimum grade of 70% (7 correct answers) must be achieved in order to obtain CME credit.
